Are Used Sea Ray Boats Worth Buying? An Honest Review

Walk through any marina on Percy Priest or Old Hickory on a summer weekend and you'll see Sea Rays everywhere. It's the most-listed used boat brand in the Nashville market. But does that popularity mean it's actually a good boat to buy used? Here's our honest take.

Sea Ray's Legacy

Sea Ray has been building fiberglass powerboats since 1959. Brunswick Corporation acquired them in 1986 and has operated them as a premium brand ever since. At their peak, Sea Ray built everything from 16-foot bowriders to 60-foot motoryachts.

What Sea Ray Does Well

Fit and finish. Sea Ray has always prioritized interior quality. The upholstery, gel coat, and overall aesthetic on a well-maintained Sea Ray is excellent.

MerCruiser integration. Sea Ray boats are designed around MerCruiser I/O systems. Because Mercury also makes MerCruiser, the integration is tight and parts and service are widely available in Middle Tennessee.

Ride quality. Sea Ray hulls are well-designed for the fiberglass bowrider segment. They ride and handle well in a variety of conditions.

Resale. The brand name carries weight. Well-maintained Sea Rays hold value reasonably well on the Nashville used market.

What to Watch When Buying a Used Sea Ray

I/O maintenance history. MerCruiser I/O systems need regular bellows, gimbal bearing, and impeller replacement. Always ask for service records and inspect the bellows — failure leads to major engine damage.

Gel coat condition. Fiberglass shows its age in the gel coat. Oxidation and stress cracks are common on older Sea Rays. Check carefully in bright sunlight.

Stringers and floor. On boats from the late 1990s to early 2000s, wood-core stringers and floors can develop soft spots from water intrusion. Bounce on the floor and check under storage compartments.
