When Is Boating Season in Nashville, TN? A Month-by-Month Guide

One of the best things about boating in Middle Tennessee is that the season isn't limited to a few months. With mild winters and early springs, Nashville-area boaters can realistically get on the water 8-9 months of the year — and some are out all 12. Here's what to expect month by month on Percy Priest and Old Hickory.

March — The Season Opener

Water temps in the high 40s to mid-50s. Too cold for swimming but perfectly fine for fishing and early spring cruising. Crowds are minimal — you'll have the lake practically to yourself on weekdays. Smart buyers pick up their used boat in early spring before summer prices and competition pick up.

April — Spring Boating at Its Best

Water warming into the 60s, air temps pleasant. Fishing is excellent. The lake is still uncrowded and conditions are often ideal — calm mornings, light afternoon breeze. Bass fishing in April on Percy Priest and Old Hickory is some of the best of the year.

May — Full Spring, Pre-Summer Rush

Water temps hitting the low 70s by late May — swimable for the brave. Pontoon season kicks off in earnest. Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of full summer crowds. The two weeks before Memorial Day are the last stretch of spring tranquility.

June — Peak Season Begins

Water in the mid-70s, crowds arriving. This is the beginning of the busiest stretch. Percy Priest gets crowded by 10am on summer weekends. Old Hickory and Center Hill offer more breathing room.

July — Peak of Peak Season

Water temps at their warmest — often reaching 82-85°F. July 4th is the busiest single day of the year on Percy Priest. Arrive at the ramp before 7am or after 4pm to avoid the worst of it. Best month for wake surfing and tubing.

August — Hot and Busy

Similar to July. Heat keeps some people off the water by midday — mornings are excellent. Back-to-school shopping starts pulling families away in late August, slightly reducing weekend crowds.

September — The Hidden Best Month

This is the secret. Water temps still in the low-to-mid 70s, air temperatures dropping into comfortable range, and dramatically fewer boats on the water. September on Percy Priest or Old Hickory might be the best boating of the year.

October — Fall Colors on the Water

Water cools into the 60s. Fishing picks back up. The foliage along the shoreline of Center Hill and Old Hickory in October is spectacular. Crowds are minimal. A light jacket in the morning, a perfect afternoon.

November–February — The Off-Season

Cold water but not frozen. Hardy anglers are still out on mild weekends. Most people pull their boats for winter — which is also when you'll find the best deals on used boats at Bill's.

Best Time to Buy a Boat in Nashville?

Fall and winter. Sellers are motivated, competition is lower, and dealers have incentive to move inventory before the slow season. Buying in October or November means you'll be ready to launch the moment spring arrives.
